Announcements

November 13th

If you would like to pay ahead of time through PayPal, be sure to use the “Friends and Family” option and send the money to homeschoolersinservice@gmail.com.  Otherwise, come with exact cash on the day of.
  • Northside Under Construction
    • Northside is holding their ground-breaking ceremony this Sunday to start work on a new addition so we will need to be aware of construction.
      • This will mostly affect the classes upstairs.
      • Nap time can take place on the other side of the building if there’s too much noise.
      • Keep a close watch on kids if you leave the building.

October 8th

  • Our first field trip is coming on the October 30th.  Please fill out this field trip response form letting us know if you will be coming and how many people you will have with you.
  • It’s time again for the reminder of the importance of making co-op a top priority. We have two dedicated subs this year. These people are always needed to cover unexpected absences. When you plan to be out you are ensuring that three people won’t get a break that week in order to cover you. If too many plan to be gone we won’t have enough adults and will just have to cancel co-op all together that day. Please understand that legitimate things come up, illness, car trouble, family in the hospital, a death in the family. These things are all understandable absences and we have had every one of them as reasons people have missed already this year. We need everyone else ready to pitch in and cover these real needs. When you plan to be out and it coincides with people out for real needs you’re putting a burden on everyone who did make co-op a priority. Please make co-op a top priority. Please be very careful when scheduling things to be sure that it’s not during co-op. Please be thoughtful of the co-op family.

  • The schedules and student class lists are now available on the “Documents” page of the website.

May 9th, 2018

      • Tomorrow is the End of the Year Picnic.  Once again we did not rent the pavilion… on purpose this time!  😉  It’s Thursday afternoon so I doubt anyone will have claimed it and, even if they have, it’s not supposed to rain so I’m sure we’ll still be fine.  You might want to bring some chairs or a blanket just in case.  Also, feel free to bring fun park stuff.  Frisbees, kites….
        • Date: May 10th
        • Time: 12:00
        • Location: Nathaniel Greene Park
        • Activities:  The Leadership class has planned out some fun games for the elementary kids.  Youth will help with the games and just hang out. 😉  Preschool and littles can play on the playground.
        • Yummies: Bring your own lunch and co-op will provide ice cream for everyone!
      • Yearbooks
        • Surprise!  I have the yearbooks and I’ll bring them with me to the park tomorrow.  Please bring your money to pay if you haven’t already.
      • End of the Year “Show-off” Night – We’re going to start this event in the Sanctuary for a short time.  We will go over a couple of things and the pre-school will have their cute little graduation and then we’ll move on to look at all the fun work.  🙂

        • Pre-school graduation: Debra is going to be having a little graduation for our preschoolers that are ready to move into Kindergarten.  🙂
  • May 2nd, 2018

  • April 18th, 2018
        • ***Important announcement***We are not going to have anyone under youth age in the sanctuary for the remainder of this year’s co-op. Apparently, there is still a problem with food being eaten in there. We will do our pledges and announcements in the gym and kids will stay in their classrooms until their parents pick them up. I know this isn’t ideal, but it’s only 2 more weeks. Please make sure your kids know not to leave the gym when the bell rings after lunch. We would like mentors to line up at the volleyball net, toddlers nearest to the door, followed by preschool and so on until youth nearest to the outside wall. Kids will need to line up behind their mentor and sit down. Teachers, please help as I’m sure this will be somewhat chaotic.

Mentor’s, please prepare your class to stay in the room until their parent comes for them. Teachers will need to clean up while the kids are still in the room. Again, we know it’s not ideal, sorry.

Youth and youth teachers, NO FOOD OR DRINK IN THE SANCTUARY. Even food brought for snack time needs to be left outside the sanctuary. You are welcome to leave things in the gym. We’ll have a table set up where you can leave those things and we’ll make sure they stay safe for you.

          Thanks, everyone!

          • We have four graduates participating in our graduation this year.  Two of them are Kelsey and Jon-Paul from our co-op.  We would like to invite our co-op family to come help us celebrate this time with us.  The graduation is at 6:30 pm on Friday, May 4th.  We hope to see you there.
        • New Co-op Location

        • Visitor’s Day
          • Visitor’s Day is this week. One of the things we hear from people a lot is a request that we not bring in new families. I understand that it comes from a love for our group and wanting to keep it small and intimate. But we really want you to understand the vision and purpose of this co-op. We do want to stay close-knit and be a manageable size, but we have always said that our heart is to welcome and serve the families that the Lord brings to us. Our first year we had around 12 families. Not nearly enough to run the co-op that we had envisioned, but we looked at each other and said, “these families need us, this is who the Lord brought, let’s make it work.” And we did. The next year we grew in numbers and found a much smaller building. We said the same thing, “this is what the Lord has brought us”, and we made it work. While it isn’t our desire to grow and grow, it is the desire of our hearts to serve who God brings, to the max that the building that He gives us can hold. Please help to welcome our visitors, and pray that God will lead the right people to us. People who need us, who we can serve, people who will become new friends. Please talk this over with your kids too. Let’s make it our goal to bless these visitors, whether they join us next year or not.
        • Field Trip
          • The information for our last field trip is up on the “Field Trip” page of the site.  Please go check it out.
        • Graduation
          • We have three graduates participating in our graduation this year.  Two of them are Kelsey and Jon-Paul from our co-op.  We would like to invite our co-op family to come help us celebrate this time with us.  The graduation is at 6:30 pm on Friday, May 4th.  We hope to see you there.
        • New Co-op Location
          • We found out today that we, once again, need to find a new location for next year.  As you know, we have tried lots of churches in the area and have so far come up with nothing.  We are not looking forward to this task, but we are trusting God to help us find another new home.  If anyone has ANY ideas of where we could have co-op next year, please let April know.  At this point, we are open to thinking outside the box.

          • Yearbook Orders
            • I will have a sign up sheet for yearbook orders tomorrow.  You can pay when you order or wait until you pick them up.

          • End of the Year Survey
            • Several people still have not filled out the end of the year survey.  If you have not yet filled that out, please go to the Documents page of the website and do that as soon as possible.
          • Extra Service Project Opportunity
            • A friend of ours is the director of the Baby Hub and they are hosting their 2nd Community Resource Fair at the Springfield Dream Center on Wednesday, April 18, 2018.  She is looking for volunteers to help her that day from about 8:30-12:30.  Moms and teenagers are welcome to be part.  She also has need of people who would have a current background check in place (that’s all of you) to help in the child activities area.  Let me know if you would like to help.

          • Supply Request
Supply requests must be made on the supply request forms located on the table by the supply cabinets and ONLY on those forms. Please do not send messages/emails or just tell someone your supply needs as those types of requests have a real chance of getting lost or forgotten. Plus, we want to keep our co-op jobs at co-op. Any request for supplies must be made at least a week prior to the week you need it.

      February 21st, 2018

          • Painting Class – Our painting class has A LOT of cleanup and we’re running late getting out of the church.  To fix this issue, we are going to put these changes into effect this week:
            • The large, 2″ paint brushes will be left at co-op.  Please have each student write their name on the handle of their brush.
            • Students in the painting class will need to set up their station during snack time.  They will need to have their paints, brushes, and anything else they need out and ready to go.
            • Students will need to move as quickly as possible to the painting class after 3rd period to have a few extra minutes at the end to clean up.
            • As soon as the students come into the gym for painting, they need to leave their backpacks on the chairs along the wall.
            • When class is over, students will need to rinse their brushes at their stations, then quickly move away from the painting area and head to their cleaning positions.
          • Illness:
            • Again, please be mindful about illness.  I know there is a lot going around right now and I would hate to spread that around through our group.

          • -CO-OP CANCELLED- Due to too many people out sick, we are going to cancel co-op tomorrow. We will see you next week.

          • Absences:
            • Just a reminder to let either Jackie or me know when you will be out.  Please send one of us a personal message through facebook, a text, or an email.  Posts on facebook or asking a friend to let us know that you’ll be out doesn’t always work and that’s hard to keep track of.  Thanks!
          • Graduation:
            • We are planning to host a high school graduation ceremony. With SHEM disbanding we know there will be some seniors searching for a graduation to be a part of, so we are going to open this up to graduating seniors outside of our group.  Plans are still being finalized as far as location and exact date. We will keep it to Springfield and the beginning of May.  If you know someone that is looking for a place to have their student graduate, please pass this info along to them.
          • Valentine’s Parties:
            • Valentine’s parties are NEXT week on the 15th.  Please check the class facebook messages for details on individual parties.

      January 31st, 2018

Just a reminder that, while it is important to make co-op a priority, it is even more important that we not share illnesses or even potential illnesses. Please be thoughtful of our co-op families. No one wants the flu to spread through their family. Some of our members have compromised immune systems and something like the flu could be very dangerous. We don’t want to make more hard and fast rules (other than the 24-hour illness free one already in place). We just want to leave it up to each of you to be thoughtful and careful with each other. If you have been sick or been exposed to someone who is, please make a careful judgment on whether you might be contagious.

My hope is that everyone is well and I’ll see you all tomorrow.

      January 23rd, 2018

          • I know there were several things that weren’t quite right at co-op on Thursday.  For some reason, Jackie and I must have lost our minds!!  :/  We’re sorry for that, but we’ve been working on things and we will be more organized when we get back together on the 1st.

            • Dismissal:

          • This Thursday is our field trip to Bentonville Arkansas.  Please check the Field Trip page for everything you need to know about the day.

*** CO-OP IS CANCELLED FOR THIS WEEK***

The Winter Weather Advisory says we’ll get freezing rain and road conditions will be hazardous. I know my friend Julie thinks I’m a sissy (so does my New Yorker husband 😜) but I’d rather everyone stay home where it’s safe.

Stay warm and post about what you and your kids get up to with this extra day off.

      December 12th, 2017

          • “Our Christmas party will start out with lunch. Please bring lunch for your family and a dessert to share. PLEASE BE CONSCIOUS OF NOT SPREADING ILLNESS.
            • Please be careful to be as hygienic as possible with your dessert and be thoughtful in helping to take care of our fellow co-op families. Also at this time of year, it’s good to remember our illness policy. If you or anyone in your house is sick, has been sick within 24, or you think there is a possibility that you have been exposed to something contagious DO NOT COME.
            • We have been made aware that there was a girl throwing up at co-op on Thursday. I’m not sure who it was, but that family certainly should have gone home.
          • Our Leadership class has planned out some great activities for our kids.  After lunch, elementary classes will split off into their first-hour classrooms.
            • Teachers, you will be in your normal classrooms overseeing an activity (the leadership class will provide everything you need and instructions for your class activity). The three activities are a game, decorating a cookie, and a craft (your room will have one of these)
            • Mentors, you will take your classes around to their three classrooms and stay to oversee behavior as usual.
            • Each activity will be 30 minutes long. We will ring the bell to let you know when it’s time to switch.
          • The youth kids will need to bring a wrapped, white elephant gift and they may bring some Christmas decorations if they would like. The youth will have their party in the Life Skills/Games/Auto classroom. I’m not sure of the schedule for their party, but I know that leadership has something fun planned and we are providing snacks and drinks. 🙂
          • Toddlers and the preschool class will have their parties in their classrooms.

          • Elementary Christmas Program Practice
            • The elementary classes will have shorter class times to allow for a practice time at the end of the day with all the elementary kids together in the sanctuary.  Please listen for the bell to know when to switch classes.
            • Both teachers and mentors need to go into the sanctuary during practice to keep the kids organized for the practice.
          • Pictures will be available to pick up tomorrow.
          • T-Shirts will (finally) be available for pickup at the Christmas party next week.  Please come prepared to pay for your shirts when you pick them up if you haven’t paid for them already.
          • The Christmas program is this Friday evening at 7:00.  Elementary students will need to arrive early.  We will let you know how early tomorrow during announcements.
          • The free Symphony performance is this Saturday at 2:00 p.m.  No tickets are required for this event.  It is first come first serve so we will want to get there early so we can sit together.  Again, we will let you know what time to be there tomorrow during announcements.

      November 15th, 2017

          • Thanksgiving
            • Don’t forget that we will not be meeting next week since it’s Thanksgiving.  I can’t believe it’s here already!!
          •  Pictures
            • We are having a photographer come in to take pictures on November 30th.  Please look over the order form and let me know if you will be placing an order and for how many students.  I don’t need to know which package yet, I just need to know if you will be placing an order for individual pictures of your kids.  We need to have 35-40 individual orders for students or families.  We have a lot more students than that, so I’m sure we’re fine, but I just need to make sure we have at least that many to book.   I will have a sign up sheet in the kitchen tomorrow, or you can just send me a message with how many kids you will be ordering pictures of.  We will plan to set up before co-op on November 30th for individual pictures, then have an all co-op picture taken at 12:00.  Elementary classes will take pictures during their recess time.  Youth will take a picture altogether during their snack time.

      October 18th, 2017

          • Elementary Recess
            • We are going to have recess the same way we did last week. Just to be clear, during recess time running is allowed. Running is not allowed in classrooms during snack time.
            • Mentors, if your class would like to go outside during snack time, you may do that as long as you are out there with them.
            • Mentors and elementary students are welcome to bring games and activities to do as a class once snack is finished.
            • The kindergarten through 2nd grade class can have their snack together in the STEM room and music room as long as they keep somewhat quiet since there may be sleeping babies right down the hall.  It seemed to work out last week, so let’s try that again and keep an eye on any issues.
          • Next week is our field trip to the corn maze / pumpkin patch. You can find all the information for that event on the field trips page of the website.
          • Don’t forget that we will not have classes on November 2nd.
          • Please continue to pray for Nacole’s dad and Maggie’s dad. I’m sure there are others in our group that could use prayers as well. Let’s remember to lift each other up in our prayer times.

      October 11th, 2017

          • Elementary Recess
            • We are going to try splitting up the upper and lower elementary classes for recess this week and see how it goes.  This will mean that the students will have one snack time and one recess time.  For now, we will try each class having snack time in their classrooms.  That means that mentors will stay with their students during snack time and then they will have a break time during their student’s recess break.  The lower elementary will have snack while the upper elementary has recess during the first break time and vice versa for the second break time.
          • Free Holiday Symphony Concert
            • The Springfield Symphony Orchestra is having a free Christmas concert on December 9th at 2:30 pm at Juanita K. Hammons Hall for the Performing Arts.  This would be a great way for our elementary students to see first hand what they have been learning about this semester.  Tickets are free and will only be available at the door the afternoon of the performance.  Seating is first come first serve.
          • Co-op Cancelation
            • After much consideration, Jackie and I have decided to cancel co-op on November 2nd.  We have never canceled co-op for personal reasons before, but this is a once in a lifetime event and we just feel that there is too much to be done with not enough people to function that day.  If you don’t already know, November 2nd is the day that Maizie and Taylor will get married!  <3  That means that the two of them will be gone, our parents will be gone, and Jackie and I will be out also.  We just don’t have enough people to cover everything that needs to be done.  Teachers are encouraged to include the work from this week in handouts or video links the week before for students to keep up with the class and I will be happy to set up some sort of park day or get together for everyone if that’s what you guys would like to do.

      September 30th, 2017

So, we are four weeks in now, and hopefully, everyone is settling in. I know we still have a few kinks to work out, so we’re going to go over some of those here in these announcements.

        • Supplies
          • First off, the supplies have been a little confusing.  We’re going to try to alleviate some of that confusion by laying out the steps to making sure we have the supplies that you need.
            • We will be moving the supply request forms to the table by the supply cabinet. Please use these forms to request supplies at least two weeks before you need them. If you know the supplies that you need for all of your classes, by all means, fill out a request form for all supplies needed for each class. When listing the supply that you need,  please be very specific. If there is an option for different sizes or colors of the item that you’re asking for, please put that on the request form.  You also need to put the quantity that you need and the date that you need it. There is a place for a start date and a finish date. Some supplies you will need for long periods of time, (maybe you’re working on a unit or something) but some supplies you only need for one day. We need to know if you need those supplies left in your bucket or if Jen can take them out at the end of that day.
            • Each teacher has either a shelf or a supply bucket in the supply cabinet. When you get to co-op, your supplies will be ready for you to pick up. You will need to pick up your supplies and take them to your classroom at the beginning of each day.
            • At the end of each day, the teachers need to take all the supplies that they have in their classroom and put them on the rolling cart in the foyer outside the sanctuary.
            • Please let us know if you have any questions about this process.
        • Class Locations
          • We are going to change some of the classroom locations. Since the preschool one class spends a lot of time with the toddlers anyway, we are going to combine those two classes in the toddler room to free up another classroom. The preschool kids will still do the work that they were doing.  The Preschool 2 class will move into the Preschool 1 classroom and the 1st – 3rd grade music class will move into the room where Preschool 2 was originally. I know that sounds confusing, but it’s just a little bit of shifting. This will allow the music class to have its own classroom and not have to be in the gym.
        • Youth Snack
          • Since there won’t be a class in the gym anymore, the youth will now have their snack in the gym and they will be able to buy their snacks during snack time. Hooray for youth, because kids were always forgetting to buy the snacks before. Plus, who wants to have a warm Coke for snack time? No one!
          • This also gives the moms a place where they can sit around and chit chat without having to be so quiet.  (You’re welcome Lana. 🙂 )
        • Bickering and Bullying
          • I’m not sure why, but our last class day was a little rough.  We had parents bickering with parents, kids fighting with kids, and I understand that there has been some harassment among the youth.  I don’t know what’s going on, but I do know that it needs to stop. We are a Christian co-op and we expect every member of our group to behave in a Christian manner.  We are not a public school and we do not want to resemble one. We are a group of Christian families that are wanting to instill Christian values in their children.  Please remember and remind your kids who we are.  I know that co-op can be stressful but please take a moment to remember that we are here to serve each other. Please continue to talk with your children about kindness and modeling Christ. If you or your children ever feel like you’re being mistreated, please come to us. We take this very seriously. This is the first step in trying to stem this problem, but we will take further steps if it continues. We care for each of you and pour our hearts and lives into this group, it breaks our hearts to hear that it isn’t a comfortable and loving place for everyone. Please help us and do your part to make this group a place of friendship and love.
        • Cleanup
          1. Once again, I need to remind teachers that they are responsible for cleaning their classrooms.  There were several jobs left undone on our last class week and I ended up staying until 5:00 to get the church back in working order.  Please remember that we are a co-op and we can only function if we cooperate together and everyone does their part.  Babies, Toddlers, and Preschool classes will need to choose one of their teachers to stay behind to clean up the classroom.  Please do not leave your classroom until you have completed all the steps listed below.
          2. Remove the trash bag and place it outside your classroom door.
            • Please do this first so the youth assigned to pick up your trash can do their job.
            • The nursery has two garbage cans.  One in the room and one in the bathroom.
            • If there is only a little bit of trash in the can, you can leave the bag unless that little bit of trash is a diaper.
          3. Put a new trash bag in the garbage can.
          4. Wipe down the tables.
          5. Be sure that the room is clean and put back the way it should be.
          6. Make sure all supplies are taken back to the cart in the foyer.
          • No Running in the Halls
            • Teachers, please keep your class with you and quite as you move through the church halls.
          • Absent Dates
            • If you know of a co-op class day throughout the year that you will miss, please let us know so we can get it on our calendar.  Please remember that you are only allowed to have two scheduled absences per year.

          • September 20th, 2017

            • The t-shirt order form will be in the kitchen again this week.  I want to place our order this week so be sure to put in your order.
            • There are still several families that need their picture taken for the contact list.  I was pretty busy last week, but let’s try to get all of those taken during lunchtime tomorrow.
            • Our service project is next week.  Be watching the “Service Project” page for final details.

            September 12th, 2017

We had a great first week!  Please thoroughly read over these announcements.  Some are reminders of how things work this year and some are slight tweaks.  See you on Thursday!

            • Dismissal from Announcements:
              • We are going to try dismissal from announcements a little differently than last week.  During announcements, we will have the younger classes on the West side of the sanctuary and the older kids on the East side.  We will then dismiss the classes starting with toddlers from the younger side out the West doors and youth from the older side out the East doors.  Hopefully, that will still allow the older kids to quickly get to class while the littles don’t have to be still for so long.
            • Attendance Sheets:
              • Mentors, please make sure that you remember to pick up the attendance sheet for your class before announcements and keep it with you throughout the day.  Be sure to take it to recess with you so you will know who you are taking with you back to class.
            • Recess Times:
              • From now on, recess times will be more of a structured play time.  Students will still be able to eat their snack if they would like, but they won’t be allowed to just run amok around the gym.
              • We will have signs put up on the walls of the gym for each class area.  Mentors, when you drop off your kids at recess, please have your students put their backpacks in a line in their class section.  Then, at the end of the recess time, students will pick up their backpacks and line up in that same spot.  Mentors, you can pick up your students from those lines.  This should help alleviate some of the confusion of getting back to class.
              • Monitors, please make sure one of you is a door monitor and one of you is assisting Maizie or Taylor with the kids.
            • Name Tags and Attendance Sheet Boxes :
              • These boxes will still be in the kitchen when we arrive at co-op, but we will be moving them to the desk outside of the sanctuary for dismissal at the end of the day.  Please be sure to leave your name tags and attendance sheets at the end of the day.
            • Cleanup:
              • Just a reminder that teachers need to clean up their classrooms.  This includes wiping down tables, emptying trash, and just making sure that the room is back to the way it should be.  There will be new trash bags in every trash can so please place the full trash bag outside your classroom door and put the new bag in the can.  Since we technically have two teachers in the babies, toddlers, and both preschool classes, one of you will need to take the students to dismissal and one of you will need to stay and clean the room.
            • Dismissal:
              • We need to be sure that we are quickly doing whatever job we are assigned and then going to pick up our kids from the sanctuary.  Last week we had one mom left in the sanctuary with several kids well after the last class was over.  We should have people assigned to all the jobs that need to be done so please don’t feel like you need to help with a job that isn’t your assigned position.  Also, if you would like to chit chat after co-op, please pick up your kids first and keep them with you while you talk.
            • T-Shirts:
              • I was able to figure out the t-shirts for this year and I will have the order sheet with me on Thursday.  I will be in the gym kitchen.  The shirts are slightly more expensive this year since we got in on a sale last year and they’re not running that sale again.  :/  Sizes S to XL in all styles will be $10.00 and sizes 2XL and 3XL are $11.50.  There is a possibility that these prices could go down a dollar depending on how many shirts are ordered.
              • Alumni crew, if you have a t-shirt from last year, wear it this week so our new people can see what they’re ordering.  🙂
            • Yearbook Pictures:
              • If you’re new, you might not know, but we have a yearbook at the end of every year.  The yearbooks for the last two years are in one of the supply cabinets if you would like to see what they’re like.  When creating the yearbook, it’s helpful to get pictures that people have taken throughout the year.  Please keep this in mind when your class is doing something fun!  You can send any pictures that you think would be good in the yearbook to april.homeschoolersinservice@gmail.com.
            • New Documents:
              • There are a few new documents on the “Documents” page of the site.
                • The Contact List is posted, although we are still missing pictures from several families.  I know it was busy last week, but let’s try to get everyone’s picture taken this week.  Please look over your contact information and let me know if anything needs to be updated.
                • Jen has put together a list of the current supplies that we have in the supply cabinets.  Teachers, take a look at the list.  There might be something there that you didn’t even know that we had.
                • The Recess Monitor schedule is also posted.  You can check the list to see when you are assigned to be in the gym as a recess monitor.

            September 1st, 2017

            • The supply list is now available on the “Documents” page.
            • Please plan to arrive at co-op 30 minutes early (11:30 a.m.) to our first day so they students can look around the building before we start and so we can take family pictures for the contact list.
              • Youth students may freely walk through the building, but please take your elementary and younger children with you to show them around.
            • We will have a t-shirt order sheet on Thursday.  The t-shirt price will depend on how many orders we get this time, but they should still be $7.00 each or close to that.

            August 8th, 2017

            • Substitute Teacher Packs – Remeber that all teachers need to have two substitute teacher packs in case you’re gone. Something that goes along with your class that can be fit in anywhere during the semester. Bring those with you on the first day of class.
            • Supply lists – If you still have not given us a supply list for your class, please send that to April as soon as possible.
            • We’re looking forward to starting next week!  🙂
